Energy November 22, 2022 Dimensions: 11x18 in. Media: watercolor, liquid watercolor, alcohol marker, gel pen, fineliner pen, brush pen, white gouache, colored pencil, collaged on watercolor paper In this figure drawing I wanted to convey the energy a dancer gives off while performing. This is based off of a Red Bull Dance Off competition I went to earlier this year. When the dancers were "in the zone" and the audience was responding well to them, it was like they were surfing off of the energy of the people along with the momentum that they had built up, and in turn the power of their movements increased. I chose a pose that was reminiscent of a surfer on their board or someone stomping on the ground and sending shock waves through the ground. I began by sketching the elements of the collage such as the dancer to ensure that proportions and the folds of the clothing were accurate to create form. Then I used a pen to outline with wider line weights on the edges of the figures and hatching to indicate shadows. Watercolor washes and alcohol marker were layered to fill in the pieces and achieve the desired warmth in the people and cool tones in the energy spikes. I used line to create emphasis on the dancer as the energy spikes converge toward his feet and they have vertical streaks along them. I wanted my colors to be harmonious so I used yellows, oranges, purples, and blue-greens throughout the composition to create unity but have enough contrast for the separate elements to be obvious..
