Bricks in DC October 24, 2022 5.25" X 6" Media: Fine liner pen and liquid watercolor over graphite sketch on watercolor paper This is a study of a building in Washington D.C. I appreciated the contrast between the dusty red brick and the blue-green detailing on the building that appeared almost like copper that had been exposed to the elements. I wanted to play with the contrast of these colors as well as define the building's solid, classic style and details around its roof and windows. I used a light pencil sketch to outline the major sections without much detail.I made sure to outline sections so that I could put the correct number of windows in each natural segment of the building. Then I went in with a pen and outlined the building edges and windows as well as added texture and used hatching on shadowed areas. I relied on the pen to define the most detail. After this I knew I wanted the green center windows to stand out so after putting in an under painting that helped me see which areas were facing the sun I began to build up saturated layers, the boldest toward my focal point around the blue column.
